Between writing chapters of the book, I worked on creating the image that would be the book's cover. I made dozens of test images using 3D modeling software, creating the mountain and the trees, and the glass shards that covered it, tweaking the settings to make the glass look just right. It's never perfect, but I'm happy with the final result.

Here are a couple of the earliest versions of the mountain.

Below are a series of images showing the progress I made along the way to creating the final image, and a special bonus picture of the dome before it was shattered.

An interesting fact: The final high-resolution image for the book's front cover took 69 hours, 49 minutes to render on my dual-core 2.2 ghz computer. It's the longest I've ever had to render a single image, due to all the reflections and transparency that make it take longer to process.
